skinimalism – the stripped back skin care trend

skinimalism – the stripped back skin care trend

‘Skinimalism’ is a term that’s been around for a few years now but is trending again due to the cost-of-living crisis and with consumers looking to cut back on their spending. We asked our Education Manager Victoria all about this trend, so if you’re looking to reduce your skin care budget or prefer a stripped back regimen, read on to find out more.

what is ‘skinimalism’?

This is a skin care trend based on customers who prefer a simple, stripped back routine and became popular a few years ago. It’s the antithesis of the 10-step+ regimen trend which has also reigned popular in recent years. The more recent ‘quiet quitting’ trend also lends itself to a minimalist approach to skin care. But with the recent focus on the rise in the cost of living, the skinimalist trend has become popular again as consumers look to save money and ways to maximise skin results with fewer products in their daily regimen.

is a skinimalist regimen suitable for everyone?

Yes! You may choose a simple skin care routine based on personal preference, not everyone loves a complicated regimen and that’s ok! At Dermalogica, we always say skin care doesn’t have to be complicated and you can achieve great skin with a few key essentials used consistently. The most important aspect of skin care is personalisation, as a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. But once you understand your skin and what it needs, a simple regimen can be tailored for you to help reach your skin goals.

If budget is the driving factor for stripping back your regimen, we can help you determine what to prioritise to maintain your skin’s health.

the pros and cons of skinimalism

The benefits of a minimalist approach to skin care are that you can focus on maintaining skin health and prioritise a key skin concern. Sometimes when we are trying to treat too many things with multiple products, our skin can become overwhelmed and respond negatively. If your skin is all over the place and you’re struggling to get it under control, stripping back to the basics can often be the best course of action.

On the flip side, there is a danger that we don’t include enough in our regimen. For example, we may only cleanse and moisturise and not include exfoliation or SPF, which are both critical for maintaining healthy skin.

the best formulas for a skinimalist regimen

Multi-tasking formulas are best for this trend to reduce the overall number of products in your regimen and to achieve multiple benefits.

The focus should be on ensuring skin is cleaned thoroughly and includes gentle exfoliation. Both are critical for healthy skin function. Layering of hydration with actives such as Hyaluronic Acid will ensure skin is adequately hydrated, another healthy skin essential and inclusion of SPF is crucial for skin protection.

Here’s my top product recommendations for a skinimalist regimen.

  1. PREP with an all-in-one cleanser and gently exfoliate daily
Oil to Foam Total Cleanser a makeup remover and cleanser in one formula
Daily Microfoliant a skin smoothing and brightening powder exfoliant

  1. TREAT by layering hydrating actives or use a targeted formula for your main skin concern
Hyaluronic Ceramide Mist for skin hydration and barrier replenishment
Or a targeted serum for your specific skin needs

  1. GLOW with moisturiser and UV defence
BioLumin-C Gel Moisturiser a Vitamin C glow boosting and hydrating moisturiser
Porescreen SPF 40 a pore minimising SPF with a hint of tint primer like effect

Dermalogica’s professional grade formulas are packed with multiple ingredients to deliver real results. So, if you’re stripping back your regimen to some key essentials, rest assured our formulas contain multiple actives, antioxidants, vitamins and plant botanicals to help deliver your healthiest skin.
